I discovered my artistic self while in the third grade. A classmate of mine by the name of Julie Brain had an amazing talent that I secretly wished I could have also. Julie could draw amazing unicorns. I was fortunate that I lived just around the corner from her in one of South San Jose's middle class neighborhoods called Los Paseos. I visited her often and marveled at her ability to draw. I remember practicing at home, wanting to draw as well as her and ultimately wanting to be better than her. In that same year I wrote and illustrated a compelling book for the young authors club entitled "James and the Giant Jellybean". I also won a second place ribbon for a fine Pentel pen drawing which included my masterful renderings of two butterflies aflight with a rainbow as the backdrop. That was many years ago. The rest, as they say, is history. |
